What Your Baby Should Wear for a Portrait Session

Updated: Dec 20, 2023

Having portraits of our babies is all about capturing the details we don't want to forget. We want the focus to be on baby, and we don't wan't those images to be outdated later on. When planning outfits for a baby portrait session, classic and simple never fails. Here are some ideas and tips to help you plan for your baby's time to shine in front of the camera.

The Outfit

  • FOR GIRLS: Dresses, bubbles & rompers are always good choices whether they are classic, heirloom, or boho. Make sure you have bloomers or shorts to wear under a dress.

  • FOR BOYS: Bubbles & knitted/ribbed rompers in a classic, heirloom, or boho style. It's best to wait on a classic shirt & short set until they can sit up on their own.

  • Solids and textures are best. Busy prints, giant logos, and cartoons can be distracting.

  • Make sure the clothes fit, and avoid loose straps that will need constant adjusting.

  • Shoes are not necessary. You'll want to see those tiny feet, and that's one less thing to worry about. I'm not a foot person, but there's just something irresistibly adorable about baby feet.

The Color

  • Neutral/earthy colors stand the test of time.

  • Cream, ivory, white, light pink, blush, light blue, navy blue, beige, brown, gray, olive. No bold or neon colors.

I would avoid these colors:

  • Red: Opt for burgundy or mauve.

  • Hot pink: Opt for rose, mauve, or soft pink.

  • Orange: Opt for peach or rust.

  • Purple: Opt for mauve or burgundy.

The Hair

  • FOR GIRLS: Small bows (avoid the big ones as they are distracting), small flower or pearl clip, simple pearl or floral halo headpiece.

  • FOR BOYS: If you want to add an accessory in some of the images, a hat can be very cute.

Remember, the focus is on baby and all of his sweet details. Make sure the outfit doesn't take away from that. Something classic or simple will always make baby shine.

Have a baby milestone coming up? Don't let time slip by without scheduling a session.
