Whether your session is just for baby or includes mom, dad, and siblings (which I would strongly encourage), the outfits you choose play a huge role in the overall look and feel of your images. Timeless newborn photos call for simple, classic, neutral outfits that don't distract from baby - or anyone else.
FOR BABY
Outfit ideas:
Onesie - Plain, neutral.
Bubble or Romper - Plain, neutral. Avoid straps as they will need to be readjusted constantly
Gown or heirloom gown
Wrap
Just a diaper - I would suggest having a neutral diaper cover that fits well.
What color? Whites, creams, tans, and grays work really well for baby. Neutral colors won't cast a color on baby's face and they work well with all skin tones.
Make sure it fits. Whatever you choose, well-fitting is important. You don't want it too large, swallowing up your baby and covering up all the precious details. A well-fitting onesie or gown allows us to see baby’s details and to not worry about continuously pulling an outfit down or adjusting straps.
FOR MOM & DAD
Mom When choosing your outfit, make sure you can comfortably sit, stand, lie down, move, and snuggle with baby. Here are some outfit ideas:
Classic or boho maxis - these allow for comfort and a beautiful flow
Solid color neutral blouse with pretty lace details on the arms or shoulders
Classy tank top or camisole
Wear a neutral bra and make sure it doesn't show.
Nails need to be clean and moisturized. They will be in many of the images. If you choose to wear polish, opt for a soft color. Keep jewelry simple.
Dad Dad also needs to make sure he can comfortably sit, stand, lie down, move, and snuggle with baby. Here are some outfit ideas:
t-shirt/v-neck
textured thermal shirt
henley
well fitting jeans or khakis
solid button up
Shoes aren't necessary, as your feet won't show in most photos. If you don't want to be barefoot, choose a matching neutral sock. Don't forget to remove your watch.
FOR SIBLINGS
For siblings, you can never go wrong with a classic, timeless outfit. Steer clear of outfits with straps that will need to be adjusted often.
Tips for Sister
A simple classic dress or romper in a solid neutral color. Bright colors can reflect color onto your child's face and the baby’s skin.
Avoid shirts with large logos or loud patterns.
Make sure to have bloomers or neutral shorts under dresses to cover diapers/underwear.
Leave hair down or style it in a braid or bun. Keep hair accessories simple. A small clip, small bow, small neutral flower, or a simple halo is precious.
Girls photograph best with natural nails, no polish.
Tips for Brother
Well-fitting jeans or khakis
Well-fitting solid t-shirt, v-neck, collared shirt, or henley.
For toddlers, a solid, neutral romper works well.
Avoid words, graphics, large logos, patterns, or bright colors.
The main theme for everyone: neutral + classic = timeless. Choose clothes and colors that allow the focus to be on your baby and loved ones and the bond you all share.
Have a little one on the way? Congratulations! It would be an honor to capture memories during that time for you.
