What are Heirloom Portraits?

Updated: Dec 20, 2023

Heirlooms are a very classic, elegant style of child portrait.

They are usually captured on a solid white or off white backdrop. I personally prefer off white for its softness. There is often nothing other than the child in the image. This simplicity allows for complete focus on the unique details and the essence of the child.

Heirloom portraits are often in black and white, but can also be in color. Vignetting is a popular touch on these images that makes them very unique.

The right clothing is essential in creating this timeless look.

Traditionally worn are classic childrens' styles. For girls, smocked heirloom dresses or peter pan collars. For boys, heirloom short sets, jon jons, peter pan collared or button down shirts, or bubbles. They should be a solid white, ivory, or pastel.

Who should have an heirloom portrait of their child?

Although a long time Southern tradition, heirlooms are perfect for anyone who wants a timeless portrait celebrating the individuality of their child. Heirlooms never go out of style and are meant to be printed and displayed as a forever piece of art to pass down through the generations.

Heirlooms portraits can be included in my regular child portrait sessions. I also have an heirloom vignette portrait event with 10 minute sessions that happen only once a year.
