How to Prepare for Your Child's Portrait Session

Updated: Dec 20, 2023

Choose the colors.

Neutrals always photograph well and stand the test of time.

For siblings, choose 2-3 neutrals, or other colors, that complement each other. They do not need to be matchy-matchy. However, if they are wearing heirloom outfits, matching is fine.

Solids, textures, or minimal prints are best.

Avoid busy prints, giant logos, and cartoons. They will be distracting and date your photos.

Choose the outfits.

Simple and classic. Trends are fleeting, and busy outfits take away from the focus on your child.

Make sure your child can move around comfortably and that the outfit doesn't have components that need to be continually adjusted, like straps.

I have more tips on choosing your child's outfit HERE.

Prepare Your Child

Talk to your child about the session in a positive way. Don't stress them out about behaving or giving a real smile...I will handle all of that. Let them know this should be a fun, easy experience. And hey, I'm not against you bribing them with a reward at the end. I will also have a treasure box for them to choose from.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Child's Portrait Session

LEADING UP TO THE SESSION

  • DON’T CHANGE THEIR HAIR TOO DRASTICALLY. If it's time for a haircut, schedule it a week or two before your session.

  • Try to avoid SUNBURNS and TAN LINES.

  • IRON or STEAM your outfits, and then hang them.

THE DAY OF YOUR SESSION

  • Make sure TEETH are brushed.

  • Make sure HAIR is brushed.

  • Check FINGERNAILS - and toenails if they will be visible. They should be manicured, clean, and free of chipped polish. (No polish is best.)

  • Check FACES for food, boogs, crusties, marker, etc.

  • Check ARMS, HANDS, and LEGS for dirt, marker, stickers, tatoos, etc.

  • Take off anything on WRISTS that won't be worn during the shoot long before your session starts. You don't want indentions in their arm from hair ties or watches.

  • Empty POCKETS. Especially of teens with phones and keys.

  • MOISTURIZE any skin that will be showing, from head to toe.

  • MAKE SURE THEY ARE FED. A hangry child does not make for good photos. A hangry anyone for that matter. Feel free to bring snacks, and I will have some here as well.
