Best Ages for Baby Milestone Portraits

Updated: Dec 20, 2023

The first year of your baby's life is PACKED with growth and cuteness and changes and milestones and ... exhaustion for mom and dad if we're being honest. You wish you could freeze time, or maybe not, but you definitely want to document the baby stage. Yet there are many baby stages, just in that one year. So, when is the best time to get your cutie in front of the camera for portraits? Here are the 3 best ages for baby milestone portraits.

Newborn

If you can muster the energy and plan ahead for this, do it! The best time to schedule a newborn session is with the first 2 weeks of life. But DON'T worry if you miss that window by a couple of weeks. They might be more alert then and you might not get those sleepy shots, but they will never again be that tiny. And if there is one session the parents should try to be included in at least for a few images, it's this one. Those precious images of you holding your tiny newborn and everyone all cuddled up together are priceless.

Sitter

Babies hit milestones at different times. Sitting up (without assistance) can vary any time between 6-9 months. Your baby will have changed so much by this stage, and you can capture them sitting up, on their belly with their head up, and on their back holding their tiny feet.

1 Year

You gotta get that 1 year portrait. So much more personality will have come out. They're sitting, standing, and maybe even walking. This is a great time to get a classic portrait. And I sure do love me a cake smash. I mean, what's better than having your baby dressed in the cutest outfit and smashing into a cake? The cutest captures.

So those are my favorite 3 stages, and I would definitely suggest you do each one of them. If you can't, that's okay! At least try to get them in front of the camera at some point in that first year. You won't regret it, and they will cherish them when they get older.

Have a precious babe you need captured? I'd be honored to do that for you!
